Inevitably there will be some who criticise UNESCO for classifying the vineyards of Champagne. They will point to the remnants of blue rubbish that can still be found in some of the Champagne vineyards – vestiges of spreading Paris rubbish on the vineyards in previous decades. Although such sniping is understandable, UNESCO should be applauded for giving the Champenois credit for being early and enthusiastic adopters of recycling, even though it may have modified the terroir….
Brave decision, UNESCO! I look forward to hearing, with very keen anticipation, that the CIVC has been given an award for upholding the freedom of the Press.
